A model for predicting the quantities of dissolved inorganic nitrogen released in effluents from a sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) recirculating water system ArchiMer
Pagand, Pascal; Blancheton, Jean-paul; Casellas, Claude.
Fish excretions and the transformation of nitrogen by bacteria in the nitrifying biofilter are two of the main sources of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in fish farms that use recirculating water systems. In this study, the DIN concentration in an experimental Dicentrarchus labrax aquaculture system was calculated using empirical sub-models for fish growth, ingested food and water replacement. The specific growth rate (SGR) (% day(-1)) and the daily feeding rate (DFR) (% day(-1)) both depend on the average weight, W (g), of the fish: Y = aW(b), where Y may be SGR or DFR, and a and b are empirical constants. The DIN discharge rate, Gamma(N) (% of ingested nitrogen), in the experimental aquaculture system was expressed as a function of increasing...

Heterotrophic Bacteria Show Weak Competition for Nitrogen in Mediterranean Coastal Waters (Thau Lagoon) in Autumn ArchiMer
Trottet, Aurore; Leboulanger, Christophe; Vidussi, Francesca; Pete, Romain; Bouvy, Marc; Fouilland, Eric.
The importance of heterotrophic bacteria relative to phytoplankton in the uptake of ammonium and nitrate was studied in Mediterranean coastal waters (Thau Lagoon) during autumn, when the Mediterranean Sea received the greatest allochthonous nutrient loads. Specific inhibitors and size-fractionation methods were used in combination with isotopic N-15 tracers. NO3 (-) and NH4 (+) uptake was dominated by phytoplankton (60 % on average) during the study period, which included a flood event. Despite lower biomass specific NH4 (+) and NO3 uptake rates, free-living heterotrophic bacteria contributed significantly (> 30 %) to total microbial NH4 (+) and NO3 (-) uptake rates in low chlorophyll waters. Under these conditions, heterotrophic bacteria may be...

Temporal variability in dissolved inorganic nitrogen fluxes at the sediment-water interface and related annual budget on a continental shelf (NW Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Denis, Lionel; Grenz, Christian; Alliot, Elisabeth; Rodier, Martine.
Sediment-water dissolved inorganic nitrogen fluxes were measured monthly between November 1997 and January 1999 at two sites on the continental shelf in the Gulf of Lions. Exchanges of ammonium, nitrate and nitrite were measured using whole core incubations performed in the laboratory at in situ temperature and in the dark;. Stations were located on the shelf and near the shelf break. Nitrate release represented the major part of total dissolved inorganic nitrogen fluxes (52-98%). At station Soft, nitrate flux doubled from winter-early spring to August (4 to 10 mu mol m(-2) h(-1)). At station R, a large increase (2 to 14 mu mol m(-2) h(-1)) was recorded between December 1997 and January 1998, after which flux tended to decrease. Ammonium flux was generally...
